A checklist for when a new item does not fit

Short answer: If a new item does not fit, it is not always because you chose wrongly. Here is a list that helps you work out what is wrong and what you can do.

Check the label and the size

Start by looking at the label in the item. Is it the size you ordered? Then check the brand's size guide, which often shows measurements for chest, waist, hip or foot length. Sizes vary from brand to brand, and a medium in one brand can be the same as a small in another. Measure yourself and compare with the table, and you will know whether you got the right item or simply need a different size.

Try it on properly

Try the item on over clean clothes and in a calm setting. Move about: sit, bend and walk, so you feel whether it pulls, slips or chafes. Check whether seams and edges lie flat. A garment can look fine when you stand still but be uncomfortable in use. Give it a little time, because some fabrics give slightly after being worn a few times. Be honest, though, if it squeezes.

Underwear and close-fitting clothes

Underwear should sit close without cutting in. The elastic must not leave marks, and the fabric must not bunch. See bamboo underwear for women for an overview. If it is too tight, it can bother you all day, and if it is too loose it can slide and rub. Try another size before you give up on the piece. Check whether the fit may be a question of style rather than size.

Socks and footwear

Socks and footies must fit the foot. If they are too small, they pull at the toe and slip down, and if they are too big, they bunch under the foot. See bamboo footies for women. Measure your foot and compare with the guide. Also check whether the sock is low enough for your shoe, so it does not show. Walk around the house in them before you wear them in everyday life.

Bedding and measurements

Whether a new item fits the bed depends on the size and height of the mattress. Measure your mattress and compare with the measurements of the item. See bamboo fitted sheets. If the mattress is tall, the sheet must be deep enough to reach all the way down. Remember that the fabric can shrink slightly in the first wash, so check the instructions on the label. If you are unsure, choose a size slightly too large rather than too small.

What to do if it still does not fit

Check the shop's terms for exchange and returns before you wash it or remove the label. Keep the packaging and the receipt and read how long you have to exchange. Write to customer service if you are unsure about the size, and mention your measurements. Do not wash the item if you are considering sending it back, as the terms often require that it is unused. If you need help finding the right size, ask.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the same size not fit in all brands

Brands use different measurements and cuts. Always use the brand's own size guide and your own measurements.

Do clothes give once I have worn them

Some fabrics give slightly, but it is not something to count on. Choose a size that is comfortable from the start.

Can I exchange an item I have washed

It depends on the shop's terms. Check them before you wash the item, as many require that it is unused.
