Resteröds: Swedish basics since 1907

Resteröds is one of Sweden's oldest and most respected names in underwear and basics. The brand has existed since 1907 and is today among the leaders in Scandinavia for soft base layers for men. The expression is Swedish in the best sense: simple, properly made, without decoration, and with a fit that simply works.

Four categories cover the whole base layer.

T-shirts are the largest group, in both crew and v-neck. It is the kind of T-shirt that works as a layer under a shirt as well as on its own, and therefore gets bought several at a time.

What a hundred years does for a T-shirt

A T-shirt looks like something that cannot be got wrong, which is exactly why most of them are. The neck is where it fails: ribbing that gives after twenty washes, so the collar stands away and the shirt looks worn long before the fabric is. The shoulder seam is the other, because if it sits too far out, the sleeve hangs wrong no matter how well the rest is cut.

Those are the details a brand with a long history has had time to sort out. Resteröds has had over a hundred years to correct that sort of thing, and they make the same models year after year instead of rethinking them each season.

A small range is a choice

Resteröds does not take up much room in item count with us, and that is not because something is missing. The brand has chosen to stick to a narrow programme of the garments a man actually uses, and to leave everything else alone. It is the same thinking that lets old Scandinavian brands survive: they keep selling the same five things and making them slightly better.

For you that means the choice is easy. There are not twelve T-shirt models to pick between, there is one in two neck variants, and it is cut correctly. That is a relief when you just need to fill the drawer.

About bamboo in the base layer

Bamboo viscose is silky soft against the skin, breathable and moisture wicking, and those are the three properties that do most for a base layer. Softness is felt immediately, breathability across the day, and moisture transport in the evening, when a cotton T-shirt would have gone clammy under the arms and stayed that way.

On socks the difference is greatest. A foot in a closed shoe is a warm, damp space, and it is the moisture, not the sweat, that creates odour. A material that moves the moisture out into the fabric where it can evaporate leaves a drier foot at the end of the day.

Replacing your base layer

Most people replace their basics far too late, because it happens gradually: a T-shirt does not become unusable overnight, it just gets steadily thinner at the neck and greyer in colour. A good rule of thumb is to buy three to five new ones at a time and throw out the oldest the same day, rather than letting them sit at the bottom of the pile.

If you buy the whole layer from one brand, things wear evenly and can be replaced together instead of leaving you with a drawer where half is new and half should have gone two years ago.

About sizing and care

Resteröds cuts in the classic Scandinavian way, close to the body without being tight. On T-shirts your normal size gives an ordinary drape; go one up for looser. On boxers and undershirts stay in your normal size, because the close fit is what keeps them still. Wash at 40 degrees without fabric softener, and turn T-shirts inside out to keep the surface longer.
