A yearly cycle for the clothes

Short answer: Two seasonal changes, four quarterly checks and an annual clear-out of the wardrobe. That is the whole plan, and it takes about six hours a year in total. With fixed times you do not have to remember it all, and your clothes stay in good shape for longer.

Why a yearly cycle works

Clothes are seldom ruined by one big problem. More often it is small things that are allowed to grow: a loose seam, a hole, poor storage. A fixed yearly cycle means you look regularly and catch things early. It does not take much time, but it needs a plan you can follow.

The two seasonal changes

In April and October the clothes of one half of the year go out and the other half come in. Everything that is packed away is washed first, and everything that comes out is checked for faults. That way each season starts with clean clothes, and you notice early if something is missing.

When the change should happen

The seasonal change need not follow the calendar slavishly. When you have worn the same layer three weeks in a row, that is a good sign it suits the weather and the change can begin. If the weather is unsettled, leave part of the old clothes out a little longer.

The four quarterly checks

Look for fluff, seams and anything not worn since last time. It takes ten to fifteen minutes each time and catches the faults that would otherwise grow from two minutes of work to half an hour. Put the checks in your calendar. See bamboo t-shirts for men.

What to look for

Loose threads and seams starting to give way, stretched elastic, holes and stains that have come to light. Also check whether something just hangs in the wardrobe without being worn. A piece you have not worn since the last check is a good candidate to sort out or pass on.

The annual clear-out

Once a year you take everything out of the wardrobe and put back only what is used. It gives an overview of what you have and what is missing. Clean the wardrobe while it is empty and air it. It also shows whether you have several of the same. See bamboo clothing for women.

For sweatshirts

Thicker pieces such as sweatshirts come out in autumn and are packed away in spring. Wash them before storage and let them dry fully. Pack them loosely rather than pressed together, so they do not get creases and odours. If you need a new one, see the bamboo sweatshirt for men.

Keeping it simple

A yearly cycle must not become an extra burden. Stick to the few fixed points: two changes, four checks and one clear-out. Write them down, put them in your calendar and leave the rest. What is done regularly takes less than what is put off, and you save time over the year.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the whole year take

About six hours spread over twelve months. That covers the two seasonal changes, the four quarterly checks and the annual clear-out of the wardrobe. Small fixed slots are easier to keep than big tidying sessions.

When should the seasonal change happen

When you have worn the same layer three weeks in a row, that is a good sign. Follow the weather rather than the calendar, and leave the thickest clothes out if spring or autumn is moody.

Can you manage with one check a year

You can, but several small checks catch faults earlier. Ten to fifteen minutes four times a year is easier to keep up than one big tidy where many small faults have grown into bigger problems.
