Ankle socks and when they work

Short answer: An ankle sock should sit about two centimetres above the shoe edge. Lower and it slides down. Higher and it shows.

What makes them slide

Either the sock lacks a shaped heel or it is a size too big. Without a heel that follows the angle of the foot, the sock is pulled down with every step and sits under the heel after twenty minutes.

What to look for

A shaped heel, a close fitting rib cuff and preferably a rubber grip inside the heel. See bamboo trainer socks for women.

When they do not work

In boots and high shoes where the shoe edge sits above the sock edge. There the leather rubs directly on the skin. See bamboo socks for women and bamboo trainer liners for women.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my ankle socks slide

Usually because the heel is not shaped or the sock is too big.

Can you wear them with everything

With trainers and flat shoes. Not with boots.

Are they cooler than long socks

Marginally. The foot sweats the same whatever the cuff height.
