Bamboo viscose versus fleece

Short answer: Fleece gives the most warmth at the lowest weight, but it is plastic and smells quickly. Bamboo viscose is softer against the skin and better as the first layer.

What fleece is

Fleece is polyester with a brushed surface that traps air. The air is what insulates. That makes fleece light and warm, but it does not move moisture away from the skin the way a cellulose fibre does.

The two belong to different layers

Fleece belongs as a second or third layer, meaning on the outside. Bamboo viscose belongs as the first layer against the skin. Used in that order you get both warmth and dryness. See bamboo undershirts for men.

Odour and static

Fleece smells quickly because oils stay on the fibre, and it builds static easily in winter. Bamboo viscose has far less of both. See sweat clothing.

Bobbling and lifespan

Fleece bobbles over time and goes flat where it rubs. It insulates less after that. Bamboo viscose changes less but wears faster at the seams. See bamboo hoodies for men.

Frequently asked questions

Can fleece be worn against the skin

Yes, but many find it clammy. A thin bamboo layer in between solves it.

Does fleece shed microplastic

Yes, in every wash. It is one of the biggest sources among ordinary clothing.

Which is warmest at the same weight

Fleece. Bamboo viscose is nowhere near it.
