Buying sheets in a new size for the first time
Short answer: A new mattress often needs a new sheet, and the measurements have to match in width, length and depth. Here is how to measure, what to look for and how to care for your new sheet.
Measure the mattress, not the bed
It is the mattress measurements that count, not the bed frame. Measure the width and length in centimetres, and measure the depth from bottom to top as well. If you use a mattress topper, add its depth too. Many mattresses come in sizes such as 90x200, 140x200, 160x200 or 180x200, but the depth varies a great deal, from around 15 to more than 30 centimetres. The depth is usually the reason a new sheet does not fit.
Fitted sheet or flat sheet
A fitted sheet has elastic in the corners and holds on to the mattress. It is easy to put on and smooths itself out. A flat sheet is a single piece of fabric tucked under the mattress, and it suits several depths, but it needs straightening more often. Browse bamboo sheets for sizes and types, and always check which mattress depth a fitted sheet is designed for before you order.
The fabric and how it sleeps
Sheets in bamboo viscose have a smooth surface that feels cool when you get into bed. Viscose can absorb moisture, which many people find pleasant if they sweat at night. The fabric is, however, a little more delicate than cotton when wet, so it should be washed gently. A sateen weave has a slightly glossy side, while a percale or plain weave is more matt and feels a little crisper and fresher.
First wash and shrinkage
Wash the sheet before use to remove any finishing agents. Many sheets shrink slightly in the first wash, which is one reason fitted sheets are often made a little larger than the mattress. Wash at 40 degrees and do not use too much detergent. Avoid high heat in the tumble dryer, since viscose can shrink more than cotton. Put the sheet on when it is dry, so the elastic is not overstretched.
How many you need
A good rule of thumb is two or three sheets per bed, so there is always a clean one while another is being washed and dried. If you are buying for a new size, start with two and see how they fit before buying more. You can also keep an eye on the sale for women, which sometimes includes bed linen.
Storage and lifespan
Fold fitted sheets by tucking the corners into each other, so they lie flat in the cupboard. Store them somewhere dry and dark so the colour lasts. A sheet is worn out when the fabric becomes thin in the middle or the elastic no longer grips the mattress. The brand Resteröds is one example of a label using bamboo viscose, and as with every brand, the care label is the most important guide.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure mattress depth
Measure from the bottom to the top along the side. If you use a topper, include it.
Do bamboo sheets shrink
They can shrink slightly in the first wash, especially at high heat. Wash at 40 degrees and dry on low heat.
How many sheets do I need per bed
Two to three is practical, so one is always ready while another is in the wash.
