Can you dye bamboo clothing at home
Short answer: Yes, it is possible, because bamboo viscose is a cellulose fibre that takes the same kinds of dye as cotton. The result depends on the original colour, the sewing thread and any elastane, though, so it is wise to expect a slightly uneven outcome.
Which dye suits viscose
Viscose is made from cellulose, like cotton and linen. That means dyes sold for cotton also work on viscose. These are usually fibre reactive dyes or machine dyes. Dyes made for polyester or nylon, on the other hand, will not take. Read the packet and check whether it mentions viscose or rayon, which is another name for the same type of fibre and is common on labels.
The original colour matters a lot
Dye sits on top of the colour already in the fabric. You can make a light top darker, but you cannot make a dark top lighter. White and pale shades give the most predictable result. A yellow top dyed blue will turn greenish. Think about how the colours will mix before you start. See bamboo tops for women.
Sewing thread and elastane
Many garments are sewn with polyester thread because it is strong. Polyester does not take cellulose dye, so the seams stay in their original colour. That can look good as a contrast, but it is worth knowing in advance. Garments with elastane, such as briefs and close fitting underwear, can also dye unevenly, and the elastic may suffer in hot water. See bamboo panties.
The process in outline
Wash the garment first so that any finishing residue and grease are gone. Then follow the instructions on the dye packet closely, especially regarding temperature, the amount of salt and timing. The garment must be able to move freely so the dye spreads evenly. Rinse thoroughly afterwards until the water runs clear, and wash the item on its own the first few times, because excess dye can transfer.
Protect the machine and your hands
Wear gloves and protect worktops and floors. Dye can stain plastic and grout. If you dye in the washing machine, run an empty cycle with a little detergent afterwards to remove residue. Do not put other laundry in the machine while dyeing. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, read the warnings on the packet and talk to your doctor if you are unsure.
When it is better not to
Patterned T-shirts, printed garments and items that mean a lot to you are not the best candidates for a first attempt. Start instead with a simple, light T-shirt you would not mind losing. That way you learn how the dye behaves. See bamboo T-shirt for women.
Caring for dyed clothes
Dyed clothes keep their colour best when washed inside out at 30 degrees and dried in the shade. Sunlight fades most colours over time, especially on thin fabrics.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make dark clothes lighter with dye
No, dye sits on top of the existing colour. You can only go darker.
Do the seams take the dye too
Often not, because sewing thread is usually polyester.
Does home dyed clothing bleed
Yes, at first. Rinse well and wash it separately the first few times.
