Can you pass on used underwear

Short answer: As a rule, no. Most charity shops do not accept used underwear for hygiene reasons. Unworn underwear with the tags still on can often be passed on, though, and worn out underwear can go to textile recycling.

Why used underwear is a special case

Underwear sits close to the body and comes into contact with sweat, skin cells and bodily fluids. Even after a thorough wash, most people see it as something very personal, and many would not buy or accept second hand briefs or boxers. That is why charity shops and charitable organisations usually have rules saying they only take underwear that is new and unworn. In many places the same applies to socks and swimwear.

Unworn underwear can easily be passed on

If you bought underwear that did not fit and still has its tags on, the situation is different. It can often go to charity shops, shelters or organisations that help people in difficult circumstances. It is worth calling or writing first to ask what they need. In many places new underwear and new socks are among the most requested items, precisely because they are so rarely donated.

Underwear within the household

Within a household, things are different. Some siblings or couples may share vests or boxer shorts that have only been worn a few times. Here it is about what you yourself are comfortable with. Wash the clothing at the temperature on the label and make sure it is completely dry before handing it on. Most people still prefer to keep inner shorts and underpants to themselves, for example bamboo inner shorts for sport.

Worn out underwear as textile waste

Underwear that is worn out cannot be used by anyone else, but it does not have to end up in general waste. Many local authorities collect textile waste, where even torn and worn textiles can be handed in so the fibres can be recycled or used for other purposes. Check the rules where you live, as they vary. The clothing usually needs to be clean and dry and handed in inside a closed bag.

Make your underwear last longer

The most effective approach is to stop underwear wearing out quickly. Wash at the temperature on the label, use a mesh bag and avoid the tumble dryer so the elastic lasts longer. Rotate between several pairs so the same ones are not worn too often. The same applies to other clothing that is washed frequently, such as bamboo polos for men, which also keep their shape better with gentle washing.

Other textiles can bring joy

Although underwear can rarely be passed on, a great deal else can. Clean towels, bedding and blankets are often wanted by animal shelters, and intact, tidy home textiles can easily find a new life in a charity shop. Brands such as Nordic Weaving make textiles meant for many years of use, and textiles in good condition can please someone else when you no longer need them yourself.
