Changing to heavier bedding
Short answer: Switch to heavier bedding when the nights fall below ten degrees and the bedroom no longer holds its warmth. In Denmark that is typically in October. Change the duvet first and wait a week before changing the cover, so you can feel what each change does.
The order
Change the duvet first, and wait a week before you change the cover. That way you feel what each change does, and you avoid going from too cold to too warm in one night. It is a calm way to switch, and it gives you time to adjust if a night turns out differently than expected.
When the time has come
Nights under ten degrees and a bedroom that no longer holds the warmth are the sign. Follow the thermometer and not the calendar, since October can be mild or cold. If you wake up cold, or have pulled the duvet right up over your ears, it is time to bring out something heavier.
The duvet
A winter duvet of eight hundred grams or more holds the heat. Choose by how cold the bedroom really is, and not by what you usually use. A bedroom with a closed window and the radiator off needs something different from a north facing room. See bamboo bedding for covers and sets for winter.
The cover
A bamboo cover handles the moisture that builds up under a heavy duvet, so it does not turn clammy in the middle of the night. The moisture comes from the body, and under a thick duvet it has further to travel. That is why the cover matters when you switch. See bamboo envelope sheets and bamboo sheets.
The sheet in winter
The sheet lies between you and the mattress, and in winter it helps keep an even temperature under the duvet. Choose a sheet that fits well, so it does not bunch up into knots during the night. Wash it as you normally do and change it at regular intervals.
When you get too warm
If you get too warm under the heavy duvet, switch back to a medium weight duvet. It is not either or. A duvet that is slightly too heavy on a mild night can make you sweat, and then you wake up without it being about cold.
The pillow does not follow the weather
You do not need to change the pillow for the sake of temperature. It is replaced when it is worn out or no longer gives the support you need. When the season changes you therefore only need to think about the duvet, cover and sheet, and not the whole bed.
Air and order
When you bring out the winter duvet, air it first. Hang it outside for a few hours if the weather allows, or lay it over a chair with a window open. That clears the stuffy smell from summer, and you put a duvet in the bed that feels fresh and airy.
When is it too late
If you wake up cold, the switch should have happened earlier. That does not matter, since you can switch today. With a heavier duvet and a cover that copes with moisture, you sleep warmer tonight. Give yourself time to feel what works.
Frequently asked questions
Should you change the pillow too?
Not for the sake of temperature. The pillow is replaced when it is worn out, and that has nothing to do with the season.
