Closed loop production explained

Short answer: A closed loop means the solvent is captured and reused rather than discharged. That is the difference between the lyocell process and the classic viscose process.

What a closed loop is

In a closed system the chemicals used to dissolve the cellulose are returned to the process after use. Losses are small, and emissions are therefore far lower than in an open system.

Why it matters for bamboo

Classic viscose production uses chemicals that have to be removed from wastewater afterwards. The lyocell process uses a different solvent that can be reused directly. Some manufacturers therefore process bamboo by the lyocell method. See bamboo clothing for women.

What you can see on the product
