Grass stains in light fabric

Short answer: Grass is plant dye and protein in one. Treat with an enzyme detergent or a little surgical spirit and keep heat away until the stain is out.

Why grass is difficult

Chlorophyll bonds chemically to the fibre, and the sap also contains protein and sugar. That is why ordinary detergent only works partly. The stain also turns permanent quickly if it goes through a tumble dryer.

The treatment that works best

Dab the stain with a little surgical spirit on a cotton bud, working from the edge inwards. Then soak the garment for an hour in lukewarm water with enzyme detergent and wash as usual. Test the spirit on a hidden spot first on coloured fabric.
