Hip measurement and where you hit the widest point
Short answer: Measure around the widest point over the seat, not at the hip bone. The difference between the two places is often eight centimetres.
The common mistake
Many people place the tape on the hip bones because that feels like the hip. The widest point sits lower, around the fullest part of the seat. Measure too high and everything you order comes out tight over the seat.
How to find the spot
Stand with your feet together in front of a mirror. Move the tape up and down until the number is largest. That is the hip measurement. Keep the tape level all the way round and check in the mirror that it does not droop at the back.
What the number is used for
Hip is the most important figure for briefs, underwear, trousers and skirts. For low rise trousers it matters more than the waist. See bamboo briefs for women and bamboo underwear briefs for men.
When the hip decides the size
Always choose by the largest measurement a garment covers. If your hip is two sizes above your waist, choose by the hip and alter the waist. See bamboo trousers for women.
Frequently asked questions
Should I measure with clothes on
Only a thin layer. Trousers with thick seams give a measurement that is too big.
What if my seat is very flat
Then the widest point sits higher. The method is the same: move the tape and find the largest number.
Is the hip measurement used for tops too
For long tops and dresses yes, because they have to pass over the hip.
