How often a towel should be changed

Short answer: After three to four uses, and more often if it does not dry in between. Moisture is the only reason a towel starts to smell. Hang it wide open and it dries faster.

What decides it

What matters is whether the towel dries completely between uses. Hung wide in a room with airflow, it can be used four times. Hung folded on a hook, it can barely be used twice. The number depends more on how it hangs than on how dirty it looks. See bamboo towels.

Why it smells

A towel smells because of bacteria that live on the moisture left in the fabric. When the towel does not dry fully, they find good conditions, and the smell comes even if the towel was washed recently. So it is rarely the wash itself that is the problem, but what happens between uses.

The hanging

Hang the towel wide on a rail rather than folded on a hook. A folded towel dries only on the outside, and the inside stays damp all day. On a rail or two hooks where it can hang freely, air reaches both sides. That is the change that makes the biggest difference to odour.

The number

Two sets per person is a good solution, so one can dry out completely while the other is in use. It is the simplest way to avoid the smell. Rotate between the sets and let each towel have a whole day to dry before it is used again. See home and homewear in bamboo.

Does washing hotter help

A little, but the hanging matters more. A towel that does not dry will soon smell again, however hot you wash it. Follow the care label and focus on getting the towel dry every time. Wash it after three to four uses, or sooner if it feels clammy.

Fabric softener

Do not use fabric softener on towels. It leaves a film on the fabric, so the towel absorbs less and dries more slowly. If you wash without softener, the towel keeps its ability to absorb water. It is an easy thing to drop, and it makes the towel better in the long run.

The bathroom

In a small bathroom without ventilation, a towel finds it hard to dry. Open a window or switch on the extractor fan, and hang the towel where there is air. If it must hang in the bathroom, use a rail that stands clear of the wall so air can reach it.

Bedding and towels

Towels and bedding share the same challenge: both take up moisture, and both smell if they get no air. Think of them as one household routine, so you remember to air and change both. See bamboo bedding if you want to add more soft textiles for the home.

A simple rule of thumb

Change the towel after three to four uses, and more often if it has not dried. Hang it wide, rotate between two sets, and skip fabric softener. With those three habits you need not guess when it is time to wash, and the towels last longer and smell less.

Frequently asked questions

Why do towels smell

A little, but the hanging matters more. A towel that does not dry smells again quickly, however hot you wash it.

Should you use fabric softener

No. It leaves a film on the fabric, so the towel absorbs less and dries more slowly, which makes the smell worse in the long run.
