How rotation extends the life

Short answer: Rotation spreads out the wear. Ten garments worn in turn last longer together than ten garments where the same three are worn all the time.

The two kinds of wear

There are two kinds of wear. Mechanical wear comes from friction and is spread evenly when you rotate. Chemical ageing of elastic happens whether or not the garment is worn, which is why rotation is not free: a garment that sits for three years ages too. Rotation helps against the first and cannot stop the second.

The right balance

Seven to ten pieces in one category is enough. With more than that, the bottom ones age in the drawer before they are used up, and you have bought them without getting any benefit. The aim is to wear garments evenly, not to own as many as possible. See the bamboo dressing gown for men as an example of something worn less often.

The method that works

Put freshly washed items at the bottom and take from the top. Then everything is used equally without you having to think about it, and no garment sits untouched. You do not need a fixed order or a list. See all bamboo socks for men and bamboo sports bra if you want to add to your rotation.

Why two kinds of wear matter

The difference explains why one garment in daily use and ten garments in rotation do not wear alike. If you wear one every day, both kinds of wear hit it at once. With ten, the mechanical wear is spread out and the chemical ageing runs its course quietly. The numbers sound simple, but the effect only shows after a couple of years.

What ageing in the drawer means

Elastic ages even when it is not used. The rubber in elastic slowly breaks down by itself, and that happens in a closed drawer too. That is why there is no point in saving the nice pieces for later. A garment that is not worn is still on its way to wearing out. Use them while they are still in good condition.

How many do I need

Count the garments you actually wear in a week. If you need five pairs of socks a week, seven to ten pairs is plenty. More than that just sit there. If you have few today, it is better to add one pair at a time rather than a big pile at once, so they do not all age together.

Washing is part of it

Rotation is also about washing. A garment that is worn less often needs washing less often, and that spares the fabric from wash and heat. Wash only when the garment has been worn, and choose a gentle programme at a low temperature. That way you get the benefit of rotation and of gentle washing at once, and the two reinforce each other.

Clothes for summer and winter

Clothes you only use part of the year age all year. If you bought ten pairs for summer, they age in winter too while they sit in the cupboard. Buy fewer and use them more. That way each garment is worn in the season where it is useful, and you avoid owning many that just hang there.

How to get started

Start with what you wear most. Count how many you have and put them in one pile. Put freshly washed items at the bottom and use from the top. After a couple of weeks the method is a habit, and after half a year you can see a difference in the fabric. There is no need to replace everything at once.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have too many

Yes. Elastic ages in the drawer, so twenty pairs of socks do not last twice as long as ten. Seven to ten pieces in one category is usually enough to get the full benefit of rotation.

Does it apply to bedding too

Yes, three sets is the practical number. One is on the bed, one in the cupboard and one in the wash, so each set rests two thirds of the time and wears far more evenly.

What about clothes you only wear in summer

They age all year. Buy fewer and use them more, so that you do not have a pile of garments sitting in the cupboard and ageing without being worn in season.
