How to find your brief size without guessing

Short answer: Measure around the widest point of your hips, not your waist. That is the measurement briefs sizes are built on, and it is where most people go wrong, because they start from their trouser or waist size.

The hips, not the waist

Briefs sit over the hips, which is why the hip measurement decides the size. Your waist measurement says almost nothing about how briefs will fit, because the waistband rarely sits at the waist. Use your hip measurement as the starting point and compare it with the chart. See the guide to briefs and underwear.

Finding the widest point

The widest point is usually around the hip bones and seat, not where your trouser waistband sits. Stand side on in front of a mirror and find the point where your body is widest. That is where you measure, even if it feels lower than expected.

Keep the tape level

Stand upright, keep the tape level all the way round and do not pull it tight. A crooked or tight tape gives a size too small. It is easier to get right if someone helps, or if you look in the mirror while measuring. Measure twice to be sure.

Measure over thin briefs

Measure directly on the skin or over a pair of thin briefs. Thick trousers or jeans add several centimetres and give a size too large. Also measure at a time when you have not just eaten a big meal, so the number reflects a normal day.

If you are between two sizes

Go up. Briefs that are slightly too big can be worn, while briefs that are too small cut in at the leg all day. The larger size also gives a little room if the fabric shrinks slightly in the wash. See bamboo briefs.

The cut changes the feel

The same size feels different in a hipster and a tai. A hipster covers more and spreads the pressure, while a tai has narrower sides and can feel tighter at the hip. Try the cut before drawing conclusions about size. See bamboo underwear for women.

Signs the size is wrong

If the leg opening digs in or the waistband rolls down, the briefs are too small. If the fabric folds or the briefs slip, they are too big. If they ride up, it may be the cut or leg opening rather than the size. Notice how they sit after a full day.

Material affects fit

A fabric with stretch gives more than pure cotton. So the same measurement can feel different in two materials. Bamboo viscose with elastane follows the body and is more forgiving if you are between two sizes. Always check the chart for the specific model.

Measure again over time

Bodies change over time, and so does your size. Measure again if your briefs suddenly feel different, or if a year has passed since last time. It takes two minutes and saves you from briefs that do not fit well.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you measure for briefs?

Around the widest point of your hips, with the tape level and without pulling it tight. Measure directly on the skin or over a pair of thin briefs.

What if I am between two sizes?

Go up. Briefs that are too small cut in at the leg all day, while slightly larger ones can still be worn and give room if the fabric shrinks.

Does the same size fit in every cut?

Not always. The same size feels different in a hipster and a tai, so try the cut before drawing conclusions about your size.
