How to make nightwear last longer than one season

Short answer: Three things wear out nightwear more than anything else: heat from the dryer, fabric softener and washing too often. Remove them and a set lasts several years instead of one season, keeping both its shape and softness.

Heat is the worst

The elastic in the waistband loses its stretch from heat, not from wear. A dryer on high heat is the most common reason a waistband goes slack after six months. Dry nightwear on low heat or hang it up. Wash at 40 degrees rather than 60. The method is in washing and care.

Fabric softener makes the fabric worse

The coating from fabric softener makes the fabric less absorbent, and absorbency is the whole reason bamboo viscose feels cool. Softener does not ruin the fabric, but it takes away the quality you chose it for. Bamboo viscose is already soft, so you lose nothing by leaving it out.

Wash less, air more

Every wash wears fibres and elastic a little. Nightwear used in a cool room can manage several nights if you hang it up in the morning instead of folding it away. An hour in fresh air removes most of the smell. One or two washes a week is enough with normal use.

Two sets rather than one

If two sets take turns, each wears half as much. It is cheaper than buying a new set every year, and you always have a clean one ready when the other is in the wash. Two sets also give the fabric time to dry fully between uses. See bamboo nightwear for women.

Wash with similar textiles

Wash nightwear with other soft clothing, not with jeans, zips and hard details that snag the fabric. Turn it inside out so the surface wears less. A laundry bag is a good idea for the lightest pieces. See bamboo nightwear for men.

Less detergent

Too much detergent stays in the fabric and makes it stiff over time. Use the amount the pack gives for lightly soiled laundry, or a little less. Nightwear is rarely very dirty, so a low dose is usually enough. That spares both the fabric and the skin that lies against it all night.

Dry flat or on a hanger

If you hang nightwear by the waistband with pegs, it can be pulled out of shape while the fabric is wet and heavy. Lay it flat or use a hanger for the top, and hang the bottoms by the legs. Avoid many hours of direct sun, as it can fade the colour over time.

Storage

Fold nightwear rather than leaving it on a hook for long periods, so it does not get pulled out of shape. Store it dry to avoid smells. If it is summer nightwear being put away until next year, wash it first so no sweat sits in the fibres for months.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the waistband go slack after six months?

Because the elastic has been heated in the dryer or washed too hot. Dry on low heat and it keeps its shape for longer.

Is fabric softener bad for nightwear?

It does not ruin the fabric, but it cancels the moisture transport that makes it feel cool. Bamboo viscose is soft without fabric softener.

How many sets of nightwear should you have?

Two sets in rotation is a good starting point. Each wears half as much, and you always have a clean one ready while the other is in the wash.
