How to measure your bust size on your own

Short answer: You measure your bust by wrapping a tape measure level around the fullest part, without pulling tight. Also measure just under the bust, and compare both numbers with the size chart of the garment you want to buy.

What you need

You only need a soft tape measure and a mirror. Measure in a thin bra without heavy padding, so the number is not distorted. If you have no tape measure, you can use a piece of string and lay it along a ruler afterwards.

Measure across the fullest part

Stand with your arms hanging loosely and place the tape level around the fullest part. It must not ride up at the back or press into the skin. Breathe normally and read the number once the tape lies flat.

Use the numbers with a size chart

Every brand has its own chart, so read it before you choose. For a bamboo bra without underwire it is often band size and cup size that have to fit. If you fall between two sizes, think about what feels better on you.

Also measure under the bust

Place the tape close under the bust, where the bra band normally sits, and measure again. The difference between the two numbers helps you find the cup size. Many skip this step, but it makes the measurement far more useful.

Ask a friend to help

It works fine alone, but an extra pair of hands makes it easier to keep the tape level. Use a mirror and check that the tape lies straight all the way round. Small slants can shift the number a little, so measure twice to be safe.

When the measurement does not fit

The measurement is a starting point, not an answer key. Body shape, tissue and the stretch of the fabric all play a part, so try several sizes if you can. If you cannot try anything on, read the brand guide and choose from that.

Measure again from time to time

The body changes over time, and so do the measurements. Measure again now and then, especially if clothes suddenly fit differently. It takes a few minutes and can save you from buying something that does not fit.

Use the measurement for other clothes too

Your bust measurement is also useful for tops and shirts. Look at bamboo underwear for women and bamboo tops for women and compare your numbers with the size guide. That way you are better prepared to shop online.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure with or without a bra

Measure in a thin bra without heavy padding, so the number is as close to your body as possible. Without a bra you may get a different number, but that can work too.

How tight should the tape measure be

The tape should lie flat and close to the body without pressing into the skin. You must be able to breathe normally. If unsure, measure twice and use the average.

What if I fall between two sizes

Read the size guide of the brand you want to buy. Many choose the larger size for more comfort and the smaller one for a closer fit.
