Oxygen bleach on white fabric

Short answer: Oxygen bleach removes yellowing without breaking down the fibres the way chlorine does, and it is the only bleach that is safe on bamboo viscose. Here is how to use it, and what it should not be used on.

The difference between oxygen and chlorine

Chlorine bleach attacks the fibre itself, while oxygen bleach releases oxygen that breaks down dyes without touching the fibre. That is the central difference, and it decides which product suits bamboo viscose. Oxygen bleach works more slowly than chlorine, but in return it does not damage the fabric.

Why chlorine is a problem

Chlorine bleach makes viscose brittle and yellowish over time. That can seem backwards, because bleach is meant to make clothes white, but on viscose the opposite happens when the fibre is attacked. Keep chlorine well away from bamboo fabric, however white the laundry may seem to become at first.

How oxygen bleach works

Oxygen bleach releases oxygen that breaks down dyes, and that is what removes the yellowing. Because it does not touch the fibre, it is gentle on the fabric. It works more slowly than chlorine, so do not expect the laundry to turn white in one wash, but it does no harm if you repeat it.

How to use it

Add a tablespoon of oxygen bleach to the drum together with the detergent and wash at 40 degrees. Follow the instructions on the pack as well, because the strength can differ from product to product. Use it only in the wash itself, as intended, and not directly on the clothes without following the directions.

Temperature matters

Oxygen bleach works best at 40 degrees and above, not in cold water. If you wash cold, you will not get the effect you are after, and the product is wasted. Choose at least 40 degrees when you use oxygen bleach, and check that the garment tolerates the temperature. See bamboo sheets.

Only for white

Oxygen bleach should only be used on white laundry, because it also removes the colours you want to keep. Coloured clothes and clothes with prints should therefore stay out of that wash. Sort whites separately before you add oxygen bleach, so that you do not ruin anything. See bamboo t-shirts for men.

What it is called in the shop

In the shop it is often called oxygen bleach, oxi or bleach for coloured and white. Check the words on the pack and read what it says about use. Avoid anything that contains chlorine when you wash bamboo fabric, and choose a version that says oxygen or oxi.

How often to use it

Every third to fifth white wash is enough to keep whites white. You do not need to use it every time, and it is not meant to be a fixed part of every wash. Use it when you can see that the white is starting to lose its brightness, and leave gaps between uses.

Soaking

Oxygen bleach can also be used for soaking. An hour in warm water with a tablespoon works well on yellowed edges, for example on towels and sheets. Then wash the item as normal so that all residue is rinsed out. See bamboo towels.
