Packing clothes for a trip to India

Short answer: India is a vast country with hot plains, humid coasts and cold mountains, and the climate depends on region and season. Pack loose, covering clothes in light fabrics, a thin long sleeved layer and comfortable sleepwear for trains and hotels.

Three seasons

Across much of India people speak of three seasons: the cool dry season from November to February, the hot season from March to May, when temperatures in Delhi and Rajasthan can exceed 40 degrees, and the monsoon from June to September with heavy rain. Most tourists travel in the cool season, when days are 20 to 28 degrees. In the Himalayas and northern towns such as Shimla and Leh, winters are cold, and warm layers are essential.

Covering and respectful clothing

India has many religions and traditions, and covering clothing is both respectful and practical. Shoulders and knees should be covered, especially at temples, mosques and in rural areas. At many temples you remove your shoes and sometimes cover your head. A light scarf is useful against sun and dust and for temple visits. Loose trousers with a long tunic or shirt are a good choice.

A light long sleeved layer

A thin long sleeved layer protects against sun and mosquitoes, is respectful and feels comfortable in the heat if the fabric breathes. Viscose made from bamboo is soft and light and lets air through. See bamboo long sleeve T-shirt for men. In the northern winter it also works as a base layer under a jumper when the mornings are cool.

Nights on trains and in hotels

Many travellers use India's overnight trains, where you sleep in berths in air conditioned compartments that can be quite cold. Comfortable sleepwear that also looks presentable makes sleeping among other passengers more pleasant. See bamboo sleepwear for men. Bring a small blanket or an extra layer, and keep valuables close to you. See also sleepwear for light sets for warm hotel nights.

Shoes, dust and feet

Streets in Indian cities can be dusty, muddy or uneven. Sandals that are easy to remove at temples and a pair of closed shoes for city walking make a good combination. Bring hand sanitiser and wet wipes to clean feet and hands. Choose socks and shoes that dry quickly in the monsoon season.

Laundry and care

Most hotels and guesthouses offer inexpensive laundry, often washed by hand and dried in the sun. That means you can pack light. Ask for gentle washing of soft fabrics, and do not send delicate items if you are unsure. Clothes dry quickly in the dry season but slowly in the monsoon, so pack extra underwear for that time of year.
