Should you size up or size down
Short answer: Size up when the fabric has no stretch and the garment sits close. Size down when the fabric has plenty of stretch and the style is loose anyway.
The fabric decides more than the number
A garment in a dense knit with no elastane has no reserve. If it feels tight in the shop it will feel tight for its whole life. A garment with five percent elastane gives and moulds to the body within a couple of weeks.
When to size up
Go up one if you are between sizes and the garment is close fitting, if the fabric has no stretch, or if it is something that will be washed hot. See bamboo t-shirts for men.
When to size down
Go down one if the style is described as oversize and you want it to sit normally, or if the fabric has plenty of stretch and you know the brand. See bamboo t-shirts for women.
When you are unsure
Measure a garment you own that fits and compare with the size chart. That is more precise than any rule of thumb. See bamboo clothing for women and bamboo clothing for men.
Frequently asked questions
Is sizing up better than sizing down
Often yes, because a slightly large garment can be worn while a small one cannot.
Will it shrink, so should I size up
Only if you wash hot. At thirty degrees the shrinkage is minimal.
What if chest and waist need different sizes
Choose by the larger measurement and have the rest altered. That is easier than the other way round.
