The bedding pills after only a few washes
Short answer: Pilling comes from rubbing against heavy items in the same load and from an overfilled machine. Wash bedding on its own with plenty of room in the drum.
Why bedding is exposed
A duvet cover is large and heavy when wet. If jeans or towels are in the same load, they rub against it for the whole programme. That is the most common reason a new set pills as early as the third wash.
Wash bedding alone
Run bedding in its own load and fill the machine no more than two thirds. That lets the fabric move rather than be pressed. Close the duvet cover so less laundry gathers inside it. See bamboo bedding.
Drying without harsh heat
High dryer heat lifts the fibres and turns them into pills. Dry on low heat or on a line and take the cover out while slightly damp. The fabric is then easier to smooth out too.
How to remove pills
A fabric shaver works just as well on bedding as on clothes. Lay the fabric flat, hold it slightly taut and move the shaver in one direction. See bamboo sheets and bamboo pillowcases.
Frequently asked questions
Is pilling a sign of poor quality
Not necessarily. Washing habits matter more than price for how quickly it happens.
Does it keep pilling forever
No. Most sets pill most at the start and settle down afterwards.
Does fabric softener help
No. It makes the fabric less absorbent and does not solve the problem.
