The underwear drawer and how to keep it organised

Short answer: An organised underwear drawer needs three things: fewer items, fixed places and a simple folding method. Use small compartments or boxes, stand items upright, and go through the drawer a couple of times a year.

Why the drawer gets messy

Underwear consists of small, soft pieces that slide into each other easily. When new items are placed on top, the older ones disappear to the bottom, and in the end you only wear what is on top. The drawer fills up with pieces you never put on. The result is a long search in the morning without finding what you want. It is rarely a lack of space, but rather the absence of a fixed order you can return to each time you put laundry away.

Clear out first

Empty the whole drawer onto the bed. Throw away stretched briefs, socks with holes and bras with tired elastic, and put anything you do not wear into a bag for textile recycling. Then count how many pairs you need between two washes. For most people, seven to ten pairs of briefs and a similar number of socks are plenty. Anything beyond that just takes up room and makes the drawer harder to keep tidy over the following months.

Compartments and boxes create order

Divide the drawer with dividers or small fabric boxes. Give each category its own place: briefs in one section, socks in another, bras in a third. Boxes in one colour give a calm look. If you have several pieces from the same range, for example from Zent, they can sit together so you quickly see what goes with what. It also becomes easier to notice when a section is running low and it is time for a wash.

Fold and stand upright

Fold briefs in three to make small rectangles and stand them upright in rows. That way you see every piece at once and do not always grab the top one. Roll socks in pairs or fold them together without turning the cuff over, so the elastic lasts longer. Moulded bras are nested inside each other to keep their shape. Soft bras without underwire can simply be folded in half and placed at the back of the drawer.

Sleepwear in the drawer next door

Many people put sleepwear in the same drawer as underwear, and it soon fills up. Give your sleepwear its own drawer or a basket near the bed instead. A few sets of bamboo sleepwear for women can be folded like briefs and stood upright. Pillowcases can live with the bedding, but having extra bamboo pillowcases close at hand is useful if you like to change them more often than the rest of the bed.

Keep it tidy with small habits

Put laundry away on the day it is dry, and place freshly washed items at the back of the row so every piece gets used evenly. Go through the drawer when the seasons change and remove anything worn out. Underwear made from bamboo viscose is washed gently at 30 to 40 degrees and dried hanging, so it keeps its shape. A small effort each week means the drawer never turns into a big project again and mornings stay calm.

Frequently asked questions

How often should underwear be replaced

When the elastic loosens, the fabric thins or holes appear. With frequent wear, this is often after one to two years.

Is it better to fold or roll briefs

Both work. Folded and upright gives the best overview, while rolled saves a little more space in a shallow drawer.

How should bras be stored

Nest moulded bras inside each other to keep their shape. Avoid pushing the cups inwards, as that can leave dents.
