Underwear and sweating and what actually helps

Short answer: You sweat the same amount whatever you wear. The difference is whether the sweat stays between skin and fabric, or is moved on and evaporates. The second feels dry, even though you are sweating just as much.

Where the sweat goes

Cotton absorbs sweat and holds it in the fibres, where it stays and cools against the skin. Bamboo viscose moves it on and releases it into the air, so the skin feels drier. It is not less sweat, it simply ends up somewhere else. See bamboo underwear for men.

Why it feels clammy

The clammy feeling does not come from sweat itself but from sweat that stays put. Wet fabric against the skin cools, rubs and starts to smell sooner. When the moisture is moved away and evaporates, you barely notice it. That is why two people who sweat equally can experience the day very differently.

The layers work together

If the underwear is good but the shirt or jumper is dense and synthetic, moisture still gets stuck in the outer layer. Every layer must be able to pass moisture on for the chain to work. So check what you wear on top too, especially on days when you know you will sweat.

Fit makes a difference

Underwear that sits close to the skin without squeezing moves moisture best, because the fabric stays in constant contact with the skin. If it sits loosely, sweat gathers in folds. If it is too tight, the skin gets no air. The right size lies smooth and follows the body as you move.

Change at midday

If you are damp by lunchtime, a change does more for the rest of the day than any choice of fabric. All it takes is enough sets in the drawer, and a spare in your bag on days you know will be warm. See also bamboo underwear for women.

Washing that keeps fabric open

Fabric softener leaves a film on the fibres that makes them worse at moving moisture. Leave it out, and use no more detergent than needed. Wash at a low temperature and hang to dry. That way the fabric keeps its ability to move moisture after many washes, and holds less odour over time.

Odour comes from bacteria

Sweat hardly smells on its own. Odour appears when bacteria on the skin break sweat down, and that happens faster in damp conditions. Clothing that keeps the skin drier therefore often means less odour through the day. Wash underwear after every wear, even if it does not feel sweaty.

When it is more than heat

Heavy sweating without a warm reason, for example at rest, at night or in cool surroundings, can have an underlying cause and can often be treated. That belongs with a doctor. Clothing makes the day easier but does not remove the cause. Raise it if it affects your daily life.

Small habits that help

Bring a spare set of underwear on long days, choose airy layers over one thick one, and let your skin dry fully after a shower before dressing. These are simple steps, but together with the right fabric they make a clear difference to how dry and comfortable you feel.

Frequently asked questions

Do you sweat less in bamboo clothing?

No. You sweat the same amount, but the moisture is moved away from the skin and released into the air, so you feel drier and less clammy through the day.

Why does cotton feel clammy?

Because cotton holds sweat in its fibres instead of releasing it into the air. The wet fabric lies against the skin, cools down and can rub.

When is heavy sweating worth getting checked?

When it is heavy without a warm reason, for example at rest or at night, or when it affects your daily life. Then it is worth talking to a doctor.
