Washing socks so they last longer

Short answer: Wash at 40 degrees inside out and skip the tumble dryer. Heat and friction are the two things that wear a sock out.

Inside out

The wear happens on the inside where the foot rubs, and on the outside where the shoe rubs. Turn the sock and the dirty side is washed directly while the outer face is spared friction in the drum.

The temperature

40 degrees is enough for ordinary use and removes smell. 60 degrees only with fungus or illness, because it wears the elastic faster. See bamboo socks for men.

The drying

Hang them rather than tumbling them. The dryer makes the elastic brittle, and the elastic decides when the sock falls down. See bamboo socks for women and bamboo trainer socks for women.
