What a Danish brand means in practice

Short answer: A Danish brand means Danish design, a Danish size line and a Danish party responsible for a complaint. It rarely means Danish production, and it is worth knowing the difference when you compare brands.

What the word covers

When a brand calls itself Danish, it is usually about where the company belongs and where the decisions are made. The word does not say where the fabric was woven or the garment sewn. Those are two different questions, and it helps to keep them apart when you read a product page.

What is actually Danish

The design, the cut, the quality requirements and the company behind it are Danish. Those are the parts decided by the people who run the brand, and you can feel them in the finished garment. The sizes follow a Scandinavian standard, which means a medium suits an average Danish body.

Design and cut

A Danish design is drawn with Danish bodies and Danish everyday life in mind. You can see it in lengths, in the fit over the hip and in how the garment sits when you move. See JBS of Denmark as an example of a brand whose cut follows a Scandinavian size line.

What is rarely Danish

The sewing itself. Almost all textile production takes place in Asia, Turkey or Eastern Europe, also for Danish brands. That is not hidden, but follows from how the industry is set up. It does not in itself say anything about quality, since good and poor garments come from all places.

Production and quality are two things

A garment from a factory abroad can be excellent, and a garment from a factory close by can be the opposite. Quality depends on the requirements the brand sets and how closely it follows production. That is why fabric, sewing and washing say more than the country alone.

Why it still matters

A Danish company is easier to reach, and a complaint follows Danish law without middlemen abroad. You can write or call in your own language and get an answer from someone who knows the product. That is a practical advantage many only appreciate when a problem comes up.

Complaints and contact

If you have a complaint, it is an advantage to have a Danish party to turn to. You avoid finding your way through a foreign system and explaining your case in a foreign language. See Egtved and Copenhagen Bamboo for two brands that are reachable in that way.

How to find the country of production

The country of production is on the label or the print at the neck, as made in. Look there if you want to know where the garment was made. It is the information that can be compared across brands, and it is almost always in the same place, wherever the brand has its head office.

Frequently asked questions

Is there clothing produced in Denmark?

Very little. A few brands produce in Europe, but by far most clothing is sewn in Asia, Turkey or Eastern Europe, also at Danish brands.

Does Danish design mean a better fit?

For Danish bodies often yes, because the size line is cut for them. But fit also depends on the individual cut, so always check the measurements.

Where is the country of production stated?

On the label or the print at the neck, as made in. It is the simplest way to see where a garment was made, wherever the brand comes from.
