What descaling the machine means for your clothes

Short answer: A machine with lime on the heating element uses more energy and spreads heat unevenly. Loose pieces of lime can also end up in the clothes and make the fabric stiff. That is why it pays to keep the machine free of lime, especially with hard water.

Lime settles where it is warm

Lime separates out when water is heated, and it settles on the heating element at the bottom of the machine. Every wash adds a thin layer, and over time the layer grows thicker. The harder your water, the faster this happens. You cannot see the layer from outside, so many people notice only when the machine starts to perform worse.

Uneven heat gives an uneven wash

When the heating element is covered in lime, the water does not always reach the temperature the programme promises. The machine takes longer and uses more power to heat, and the heat spreads unevenly. Clothes then get washed at a different temperature than expected. That matters when you wash bamboo pajamas for men by the care label.

Loose pieces end up in the clothes

If lime breaks off, the pieces can catch in seams and folds. You feel them as small hard grains in the fabric, and they can make it rough on the skin. Large items such as sheets are especially likely to catch pieces. See bamboo fitted sheets and Nordic Weaving for bedding and clothes that should stay soft and clean.

Hard water makes it worse

Hard water brings more lime, so water hardness decides how often the machine should be descaled. With hard water it makes sense to descale a few times a year. With soft water there is more time between each round. Your water company can tell you the hardness in your area, so you can adjust the rhythm.

Signs of lime in the machine

A few signs can point to lime in the machine. Clothes turn stiff or get white deposits, the wash seems to take longer, and power use rises. If you see white deposits on the rubber seal or inside the door, there is probably lime further in too. No sign is a guarantee, but each is a good reason to check.

How to descale

Use a descaler made for washing machines and follow the directions on the pack. Then run an empty wash at high temperature so the product and loose lime are rinsed out. Read the machine's own manual too, since the maker may have advice for your exact model. That is the safest way to go about it.

An empty wash keeps it clean

An empty hot wash now and then keeps the drum and hoses cleaner. The heat helps loosen leftover detergent and grease that can otherwise stay behind. Leave the door open afterwards so the machine can dry fully. That also prevents odours and makes clothes smell fresher the next time you wash.

Vinegar and home remedies

Some people want to use vinegar for descaling, but many machines tolerate it badly, and rubber and seals can be damaged. Follow the maker's instructions instead of guessing. If the manual says nothing, a descaler made for washing machines is the safe choice. Ask the maker if you are unsure what your model can handle.

After descaling

After descaling, run an extra rinse so all residue is gone before you wash clothes again. Then wash as normal, with the dose that suits your water. That gives the clothes an even wash without lime and without traces of descaler. You will notice the difference in the softness of the fabric after a few washes.

Frequently asked questions

How often should the machine be descaled?

With hard water a few times a year, with soft water less often. Your water company can tell you the hardness, and the manual may give the maker's advice, which you should follow if it differs from a simple rule of thumb.

Does a hot wash without clothes help?

Yes. An empty wash at high temperature keeps drum and hoses cleaner by loosening leftover detergent and grease. It does not replace real descaling, though, if a thick layer of lime has already formed.

Can I use vinegar?

Some machines tolerate it badly, and rubber and seals can be damaged. Follow the maker's instructions instead, and use a descaler made for washing machines if the manual does not say otherwise.
