What makes a fabric resistant to bobbling
Short answer: Long fibres, a dense knit and a tightly twisted yarn give fewer bobbles. Short fibres and a loose knit give more.
Fibre length matters most
Bobbles form from fibre ends working their way out of the yarn. The longer the fibres, the fewer ends there are per centimetre of yarn. That is why long fibres such as pima and filament yarn bobble least.
Yarn twist and knit density
A tightly twisted yarn holds the fibres better. A densely knitted fabric gives the fibres less room to move. Both reduce bobbling noticeably without changing the fibre. See bamboo t-shirts for men.
What you can do yourself
Wash inside out, keep terry out of the load, avoid overfilling and let the garment rest for a day between wears. Those are the four habits that work. See bamboo clothing for women and sweat clothing.
Frequently asked questions
Is bobbling a sign of poor quality
Not in itself. It says most about friction and knit type.
Does a garment stop bobbling
Often yes. Most bobble hardest at the start and settle down afterwards.
Does a fabric shaver work
Yes, and it is the only real solution for bobbles that have already formed.
