What to do when two sizes almost fit
Short answer: Choose the smaller one if the fabric has stretch and you hang your clothes to dry. Choose the larger one if there is no stretch, or if you tumble dry.
Stretch makes room
With a few per cent elastane the fabric gives, and the smaller size works. Without stretch it does not. See bamboo underwear for men.
The drying method decides
If you tumble dry, the piece shrinks a little. Then you have to size up. If you hang it up, you can stay in the smaller one. See washing and care.
Underwear up, bra bands down
For underwear generally up, because one that is too small cuts in. For bra bands down, because a loose band does not support. See bamboo underwear for women.
Socks up
If you are at the top of a size range, go to the next one. See all bamboo socks for men.
Try both if you can
Buy both, try them and return the wrong one. See bamboo briefs.
Frequently asked questions
Should you size up or down?
Up if there is no stretch or you tumble dry. Down if there is stretch and you hang things up.
Does that apply to bras too?
No. For bra bands the opposite applies, because a loose band does not support.
Can you buy both?
Yes. Try them both and return the one that does not fit.
