What to expect from a bamboo fitted sheet

Short answer: A fitted sheet in bamboo viscose is smooth, cool and soft to lie on. Over time it becomes even softer, while the elastic at the corners and the area where you lie most are the places that show use first.

What it feels like to sleep on

A fitted sheet in bamboo viscose has a smooth, cool surface that many people compare to silk or satin. The fibre moves moisture away from the body, so the sheet feels dry and pleasant even if you run warm at night. Bamboo sheets are often woven as sateen or twill, and the weave affects the sheen, the softness and how easily the sheet creases.

Fit and elastic

A fitted sheet is held in place by the elastic around its edge. It is important to choose the right size and depth, so the elastic is not stretched too hard over the corners of the mattress. Over time, and with hot drying, the elastic can slacken and the sheet may start to slip. Dry it on low heat or air dry it, and the elastic will keep its strength for longer. See bamboo fitted sheets.

Washing bed linen

Bed linen is washed more often than most clothing. Wash the fitted sheet at 40 degrees with a mild detergent, and give it plenty of room in the machine. Fabric softener is not needed and can make the fibres less absorbent. Avoid washing the sheet with towels that shed lint, and with clothes that have zips, which can snag the smooth surface.

Drying and creases

Air drying is the gentlest option. Shake the sheet out well and hang it over a line or an airer so it dries smooth. A tumble dryer on low heat can be used, but take the sheet out while it is still slightly damp so it creases less. High heat can make viscose shrink and the elastic stiffen. Sheets usually shrink a little in the first few washes.

Wear over time

The place where you lie most wears first. Hips, shoulders and feet rub against the sheet every night, and the surface there can become slightly duller over time. Sateen woven sheets can develop small snags if caught by toenails or rough skin. That is normal and not a fault. Switching between two sets of bedding spreads the wear and gives each set time to rest.

Lifespan and care

How long a fitted sheet lasts depends on how often it is washed and how hot it is dried. A sheet washed weekly and air dried will last longer than one tumble dried on high heat every time. Bed linen from many brands, including JBS, is cared for on the same principles. Bamboo is also used for clothing, see bamboo clothing for men, and the same advice on low heat and mild detergent applies there.

Frequently asked questions

Does a bamboo fitted sheet shrink

It can shrink a little in the first washes. Choose a sheet with a bit of extra depth and avoid high heat in the dryer.

Why does my sheet slip off the mattress

The elastic may have slackened from hot drying, or the sheet may not match the depth of the mattress. Air drying helps the elastic.

Does it need ironing

It is rarely necessary. Shake it out well and hang it smooth to dry, and it will crease less.
