What to expect from a bamboo split sheet

Short answer: A split sheet in bamboo viscose is smooth, cool and made for beds with a divided mattress or an adjustable base. Over time it becomes softer, while the elastic, the edges of the split and the area where you lie most are the places that show use first.

What a split sheet is

A split sheet is a sheet with a division at one end, so it can follow two parts of a mattress that move independently. It is typically used on adjustable beds and on beds with a split topper. The division means the sheet does not pull tight when one side is raised. In bamboo viscose the sheet is smooth and cool, and the fibre moves moisture away from the body.

Fit and elastic

Split sheets often have elastic around the edge and along the split, so the sheet stays in place even as the bed is raised and lowered. The elastic is the part that ages first, especially with hot drying. Choose the right size and depth, so the elastic is not stretched too hard. Air drying or low heat in the dryer helps the elastic last longer. See bamboo split sheets.

Washing and drying

Wash the split sheet at 40 degrees with a mild detergent, and give it plenty of room in the machine. Fabric softener is not needed and can make the fibres less absorbent. Shake the sheet out well after washing and hang it to dry over a line or an airer. Viscose can shrink a little in the first washes, especially with heat, so avoid high heat in the dryer.

Wear at the split

The edges of the split move every time the bed is adjusted, and that creates friction. Over time the seams at the split can wear, and the fabric can become a little thinner. That is normal. Check the seams now and then, and stitch a loose seam before it opens further. The area where you lie most can also become slightly duller over time.

Creases and surface

Bamboo sheets in a sateen weave crease less than many other sheets, but a few creases are normal. If you hang the sheet smooth to dry, it usually looks neat enough without ironing. Sateen woven sheets can pick up small snags from toenails and rough skin. That is normal and does not affect comfort.

Lifespan and care

How long a split sheet lasts depends on how often it is washed and how hot it is dried. Two sheets in rotation spread the wear. Bed linen from brands such as JBS of Denmark and others is cared for on the same principles. The same advice on low heat and mild detergent applies to clothing too, see bamboo clothing for men. When the elastic no longer holds the sheet in place, or the fabric thins, it is time for a new one.

Frequently asked questions

What is a split sheet

A sheet with a division at one end, so it fits beds where the parts of the mattress move independently.

Does it shrink

It can shrink a little in the first washes. Wash at a low temperature and avoid high heat in the dryer.

Why does the sheet slip off

The elastic may have slackened from hot drying, or the sheet may not match the depth of the mattress.
