What to expect from a bamboo sports bra

Short answer: A bamboo sports bra is soft and comfortable and gives support for light to moderate exercise. The elastane works hard in every session and is the first part to lose its spring, so gentle washing and several bras in rotation make a big difference.

Support and comfort

A sports bra with bamboo viscose is knitted with a higher share of elastane than an ordinary soft bra, so it fits closer and holds better. The viscose adds softness against the skin. It suits yoga, walking, cycling and strength training, where movements are controlled. For running and jumping you may need a bra with more compression or moulded cups, depending on your body and the activity. See bamboo sports bra.

What exercise does to the elastane

During exercise, elastane is constantly stretched, and sweat, heat and friction wear on it. After many sessions and washes, a sports bra will usually sit a little looser and give less support than at the start. It happens gradually and is hard to notice from day to day. Compare it with a new one of the same style if you are unsure. The difference is often clear once you feel them side by side.

Washing after exercise

Wash the sports bra after each session so sweat does not settle in the fabric. Rinse it in cold water if you cannot wash it straight away. Wash in a laundry bag at 30 to 40 degrees with a mild detergent. Fabric softener coats the fabric and reduces its ability to move moisture away. The tumble dryer is hard on elastane and should be avoided. Brands such as Boody state the care clearly.

Pads and shape

Many sports bras have removable pads. Take them out before washing so they do not fold or shift, and put them back when the bra is dry. If the pads start to lose their shape, they can often be replaced. The bra should dry flat or hung from the centre, not by the straps, so the wet weight does not stretch them and weaken the fit over time.

Comfort and skin

A sports bra fits close, and under the band and straps the skin can become irritated if there is friction. That happens more often if the bra is too tight or starts to wear at the edges. Switch to another size or style if you feel discomfort. If you have skin irritation that does not settle, talk to your doctor. See also styles from JBS of Denmark.

When to replace it

A sports bra should be replaced when it no longer gives the support you need, when the band rides up, or when the fabric turns thin. How quickly that happens depends on how often you exercise and how you wash it. If you train several times a week, it makes sense to have two or three sports bras in rotation, so each one gets time to rest between wears.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bamboo sports bra be used for running

For light running some people find it fine, but many need more compression for running and jumping. Choose based on your body and activity.

Why is my sports bra getting looser

Elastane loses its spring through exercise, sweat and washing. That is normal wear.

Should a sports bra be washed after every use

Yes, ideally. Sweat left in the fabric wears on the fibres and can cause odour.
