What to expect from bamboo bedding over time

Short answer: Bamboo bedding is smooth and cool from the start and often becomes even softer with time. It needs gentle washing, because viscose is delicate when wet, and with the right care it keeps both its sheen and its fit for a long time.

The early days

Bedding made from bamboo viscose is usually woven in sateen or twill, which gives a smooth surface with a light sheen. The first impression is often that the fabric feels cool and drapes softly over the body. New bedding can have some stiffness from production, which disappears after the first wash. Wash it before you use it for the first time, and you will notice the difference straight away. See bamboo bedding for the different types available.

Softness and sheen over time

Many people find that bamboo bedding becomes softer after a few washes. The sheen from the sateen weave can turn slightly more matt over time, especially if it is washed hot or with strong detergents. That is normal and does not affect comfort. Avoid fabric softener, as it can coat the fibres and reduce the fabric's ability to absorb moisture. Half a dose of mild detergent is enough for bedding, and it rinses out more completely.

Shrinkage and fit

Viscose can shrink a little, especially in the first wash and at high temperatures. That is why duvet covers and sheets are often sewn with a little extra room. Wash at 30 to 40 degrees as the label states and avoid the tumble dryer or use it only on low heat. A fitted sheet should sit tight around the mattress. If the elastic loosens after long use, it is a sign of wear rather than a fault in the sheet itself.

Pilling and friction

The smooth surface of sateen means bamboo bedding rarely pills much. Friction can still cause wear, especially where heels and elbows meet the sheet at night. Zips and hook and loop fasteners on other clothes can also catch on the fabric in the machine. Wash bedding on its own or with other soft textiles, turn the duvet cover inside out and close the buttons before washing. Many people choose brands such as Decoy, where the care instructions are clear.

Drying and storage

Air drying is best for viscose bedding. Hang it up straight after washing so creases do not set. Smooth the fabric with your hands while it is damp, and you can often skip ironing altogether. Store it dry and airy in a cupboard, not in a plastic bag where moisture can be trapped. Having several sets in rotation spreads the wear, and each set lasts longer as a result.

When bedding is worn out

Bedding is worn out when the fabric turns thin and see-through, when small holes appear along the seams, or when the elastic on a fitted sheet no longer holds. How long that takes depends on how often you change and wash it and how it is dried. It is not unusual for the sheet to wear before the duvet cover, because it takes the most friction. Frequently asked questions

Should new bamboo bedding be washed before use

Yes, washing before use removes residue from production and makes the fabric softer.

Can bamboo bedding go in the tumble dryer

Preferably not. Low heat can work, but air drying protects the fibres and keeps the size best.

Why is my bedding less shiny than before

Hot washes and strong detergents can dull the surface a little. It does not affect comfort.
