What to expect from bamboo leggings
Short answer: Bamboo leggings are soft and stretchy and comfortable for everyday wear. They hold their shape best with gentle washing, and over time it is mainly the knees, inner thighs and waistband that show wear. They are made more for comfort than for hard training.
The fabric and the stretch
Leggings with bamboo viscose are knitted with a good share of elastane, so they can stretch and spring back. The viscose adds softness and a smooth drape, while the elastane gives shape. Compared with technical training tights the fabric is often softer and a little less compact. That makes them comfortable for everyday wear, at home and for gentle movement such as walks or stretching. See bamboo leggings for women.
Knees and bagging
Knitted fabric with viscose can give a little at the knees when you sit for a long time or crouch. That can create small bags, which often recover after washing. It is normal for soft leggings. Leggings with a higher share of elastane hold their shape better but also feel tighter. Choosing the right size, neither too loose nor too tight, helps them keep their shape for longer and reduces strain on the seams.
Inner thighs and friction
Where the thighs rub together, the fabric takes a lot of wear. This is often where thinner fabric or a dull surface shows first. It happens to all leggings whatever the material, but sooner in soft, light fabrics. If you want them to last longer, wear them in rotation with other trousers and wash them gently, so no single pair carries all the daily wear.
Washing and drying
Wash leggings inside out at 30 to 40 degrees, ideally in a laundry bag. Use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softener, which can weaken elastane over time. The tumble dryer is hard on both viscose and elastane and can make leggings shrink or lose their stretch. Hang them up or lay them flat to dry. Brands such as Copenhagen Bamboo state the care in every pair.
Sheerness
Thin leggings can turn slightly see-through when stretched, especially at bent knees. That can become more noticeable over time as the fabric thins. Check in front of a mirror while wearing them, ideally bending forward as you would during the day. If they are too sheer for what you have in mind, choose a thicker quality or wear them under a dress or a long top.
When to replace them
Leggings are worn out when the waistband no longer holds them up, when the fabric turns thin or see-through at the inner thighs and knees, or when the crotch seams start to give. How quickly that happens depends on use and washing. With several pairs, each one lasts longer. See also brands such as Resteröds.
Frequently asked questions
Can bamboo leggings be used for exercise
For gentle exercise such as yoga and walking, yes. For running and hard training, technical tights are often more durable.
Why do my leggings bag at the knees
Viscose can give a little when bent. The bagging often recovers after washing.
Can bamboo leggings go in the tumble dryer
It is not recommended. The heat can make them shrink and lose their stretch.
