What to expect from bamboo sheets

Short answer: Bamboo sheets feel smooth and cool and often become softer with time. The sheet is the part of the bedding that takes the most friction, so it usually wears before the duvet cover. Gentle washing and air drying keep it looking good the longest.

Smooth and cool from the start

Sheets made from bamboo viscose are usually woven in sateen or twill, or knitted in jersey. Sateen gives a smooth surface with a light sheen, while jersey is stretchier and feels like a soft T-shirt. Both feel cool against the skin, because viscose moves moisture away and does not hold heat in the same way as denser fabrics. See bamboo sheets for the different types and sizes.

Fitted sheets and elastic

A fitted sheet is held in place by elastic at the corners or all the way round. The elastic is the first part to age, because it is stretched each time the sheet goes on and because heat from washing and drying wears on it. Over time the sheet can sit a little looser around the mattress. Choose the right size for the depth of your mattress so the elastic is not stretched more than necessary.

Wear from heels and elbows

The sheet lies beneath you all night, and heels, elbows and hips rub against it as you turn. That is where the fabric thins first. Sateen can develop small snags if it catches on rough skin or nails. That is normal wear seen on all smooth fabrics. Many people turn or rotate the sheet so the wear is spread over a larger area, which helps it last noticeably longer.

Washing and drying

Wash sheets at 40 degrees as the label states, with a mild detergent and no fabric softener. Viscose is weaker when wet, so do not overload the machine, and avoid the highest spin speed. The tumble dryer can make the sheet shrink and wears on the elastic. Hang it up straight after washing so creases do not set. Brands such as CCDK print the care clearly on the label.

Pilling and sheen

Sateen sheets rarely pill, but the sheen can become slightly more matt over time, especially with hot washes. Jersey sheets can develop a slightly dull surface where friction is greatest. Neither affects comfort. If you wash the sheets with towels, fibres from the towels can settle on the fabric. It is better to wash them separately or with other bedding.

When to replace it

A sheet is worn out when the fabric thins at the foot end or in the middle, when small holes appear, or when the elastic no longer holds it in place. How quickly that happens depends on how often you wash it and how it is dried. With two or three sheets in rotation, each one lasts longer. See also the range from Moodies.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the sheet wear before the duvet cover

The sheet takes more friction from the body throughout the night. That is normal.

Can bamboo sheets go in the tumble dryer

Preferably not. The heat can make them shrink and wears on the elastic.

Do bamboo sheets get softer over time

Many people find they do. The fabric settles after a few washes and feels more supple.
