What to pack for a trip to Thailand
Short answer: Thailand is hot and humid all year, with temperatures around 30 degrees and high humidity. Pack light, breathable fabrics, clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples, and plenty of socks and underwear that dry quickly.
Heat and humidity around the clock
In Bangkok and on the islands the temperature typically sits between 25 and 35 degrees, and humidity is often above 70 per cent. Sweat evaporates slowly, so clothing quickly becomes damp. Choose fabrics that feel cool and let air through, such as linen, cotton or viscose from bamboo. Avoid dense synthetic fabrics that can feel clammy against the skin. Pale colours and loose cuts help as well, and it is a good idea to change your clothes once a day, or more often if you are outdoors a lot.
Temples have dress codes
At the Grand Palace in Bangkok and in many temples, shoulders and knees must be covered and clothing must not be see through. Long, light trousers and a T-shirt with sleeves are enough. You also take your shoes off before entering most temples, so sandals or shoes without laces are practical. It is considered polite not to point your feet towards Buddha statues, and to keep your voice down inside.
Socks in the heat
Many people wear sandals in Thailand, but on hikes, in the jungle or in the city in trainers, socks are still important. Feet sweat a lot in the heat, and socks that absorb moisture reduce chafing and blisters. Short socks that do not show above the shoe work well with trainers. Take a look at bamboo footies for men, and pack more pairs than you think so you can change every day without running out.
Flights and air conditioning
The flight from northern Europe takes around 11 to 13 hours, and the cabin can get cold. The same goes for indoors in Thailand, where shopping centres, buses and trains often have strong air conditioning. A light jumper and a pair of ordinary socks for the flight and the night buses are therefore a good idea. See bamboo socks for men for socks that stay comfortable for many hours at a time.
Sleeping on a tropical night
Even at night the temperature rarely falls below 24 degrees. If the room has air conditioning it can become cool, otherwise it stays warm and humid. Light nightwear in a soft, breathable fabric is the most comfortable option. Long, thin night trousers also protect against mosquitoes if the room has no net. See night pants for men. Use insect repellent in the evening as well.
Washing on the way
It is easy and inexpensive to have laundry done in Thailand, and in many places you get it back the same day. That means you do not need to pack for the whole trip. Clothing for one week is often enough for a three week journey. Light fabrics dry quickly if you rinse them yourself in the room. Be careful with very hot tumble drying of delicate fabrics, and feel free to ask for a gentle wash for underwear and socks.
