What to wear for standing concerts

Short answer: At a standing concert you are on your feet for hours, close to many other people in a warm hall. Choose light layers you can remove, soft basics that do not chafe and shoes that can cope with long periods of standing and dancing.

The heat of a packed hall

A concert hall full of people warms up quickly, even when it is cold outside. You arrive in a coat and jumper and half an hour later you are standing there sweating. Layers you can take off and tie round your waist or leave in the cloakroom are therefore best. A thin top under a loose shirt or cardigan is easy to adjust.

A thin layer next to the body

An undershirt under a blouse or T-shirt absorbs sweat and stops your top clinging to your back. It also makes stepping out into the cold after the concert more pleasant, because the outer layer is not soaked through. See bamboo undershirt for women.

A dress or skirt for the concert

Many women choose a dress or skirt for a concert. In a tight crowd and when you dance, thin shorts underneath feel reassuring. They also stop your thighs rubbing together in the heat. See bamboo shorts for women.

A slip gives the dress its drape

A thin dress can cling to your legs or tights as you move. A smooth slip gives the dress a nice drape and stops it turning see through in bright stage lighting. See bamboo slip. It also absorbs some sweat, so the dress stays fresher.

Shoes for hours on your feet

Standing for three or four hours puts more strain on your feet than you might expect. Shoes with good support and a cushioned sole matter more than style. Avoid brand new shoes that are not yet broken in. In a dense crowd, closed shoes are better than sandals, as others may tread on your toes.

Your ears

Sound levels at concerts are often high enough to damage hearing over time. Wear musician's earplugs, which reduce volume evenly without muffling the sound. Many venues sell them at the bar. If you have ringing in your ears that does not go away, talk to your doctor.

After the concert

When you step out into a cold night after a hot concert, your body cools quickly. Put your layers back on before you leave. Wash basics and underwear at 30 or 40 degrees and let them dry on a rack. Air your jacket if it has been in a hot, crowded hall.

Bag, cloakroom and valuables

Many venues have a cloakroom, and it is nice not to stand holding a heavy coat all evening. Bring a small bag with a zip that you can wear close to your body for your phone, cards and keys. Large bags are often not allowed. Drink water during the evening, and eat something before the concert so you have the energy to stand right to the end.
