What you should know about wash bags

Short answer: A laundry bag protects small and delicate items from tangling with the rest of the wash. It is the cheapest way to extend the life of underwear and socks.

Protects against tangling

Without a bag, socks and briefs easily tangle around zips, hooks and buttons from other clothes in the machine. That is how edges, straps and elastic get stretched and eventually damaged, even during an entirely ordinary wash at a normal temperature. See bamboo underwear for women.

Keeps small items together

For bras and tights

Do not overfill the bag

Close zips first

Choose the right mesh size

A fine mesh protects best against sharp items tearing the fabric, while a coarser mesh gives better water flow and therefore a cleaner wash. For most everyday items, a medium mesh is a good compromise between protection and cleanliness.

Sort by type inside the bag

Do not mix heavy and light items in the same bag, since the heavy ones can press against the light ones during the spin cycle and damage delicate details. A bag with only one type of item protects better than a mixed bag does.

Bags also keep colours apart

A bag can act as an extra barrier against coloured fabric bleeding onto lighter items during the wash, even though it does not replace normal colour sorting. That adds an extra layer of reassurance, especially with new or dark items.

Replace the bag once it wears out

The bag itself wears out over time too, and holes in the mesh make it less effective at protecting the items it is meant to guard. Check the bag regularly, and replace it if the mesh starts tearing or the seams come loose.
