When to replace your underpants

Short answer: When the waistband does not spring back, when the fabric is thin enough to see through, or when the seams start to open. Those are three clear signs, and none of them can really be repaired.

The waistband first

Pull the waistband lightly and let go. If it does not spring back, the elastic is worn out. It is the most common place for a pair to give up. A slack waistband rolls down, slips under the belt and needs constant adjusting. Then the boxers no longer do their job. See bamboo boxers for men.

Worn thin fabric

Hold them up to the light. If you can see through, a hole is coming soon. The fabric usually wears thinnest in the crotch and at the back, where there is most friction from moving and sitting. Once the fabric is thin, it goes quickly. Then it is time to restock.

Seams that open

A seam that starts to open keeps going. It can be sewn, but on a pair that is already worn, it is rarely worth the effort. Look especially at the seams in the crotch and at the legs, where there is most strain. A small hole quickly becomes a big one in the washing machine.

The fit has changed

If they have shrunk in the tumble dryer, they fit differently than when new. The legs are shorter and the waistband is tighter. That cannot be undone. The same applies if the fabric has stretched and gone baggy. If a pair no longer fits as it should, it is worn out. See washing and care.

The legs ride up

If the legs creep up your thighs when they did not before, the fabric has lost its stretch. That usually happens because the elastane has been damaged by heat. A leg that rolls can start to chafe, so here comfort decides. Then it is better to replace the pair.

How long a pair lasts

How long a pair lasts depends mostly on how often and how hot it is washed. With many pairs in rotation, each is washed less often and lasts longer. With few, they wear faster. That is why a pair washed hot every third day is done long before one washed at 40 degrees.

Restock in the same model

If you buy the same model each time, you can replace a few pairs at once without renewing the whole drawer. You know the size fits and the waistband sits right. You avoid having to decide every time. See bamboo underwear for men.

Washing that delays replacement

Wash at 40 degrees and dry on low heat or on a line. The hottest dryer setting is what destroys the elastic fastest and makes the fabric shrink. Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach. Then the waistband and stretch last longer, and replacement comes later.

In short

Replace your boxers when the waistband does not spring back, when you can see light through the fabric, or when the seams open. Shrinking and legs that ride up are also signs. Restock gradually in the same model, and wash at 40 degrees with low heat when drying, so each pair lasts longer.

Frequently asked questions

When is a pair of boxers worn out?

When the waistband does not spring back, when you can see light through the fabric, or when the seams start to open. All three signs mean the pair should be replaced.

Can a slack waistband be repaired?

No. The elastic is sewn into the channel and cannot really be replaced. When it no longer springs back, it is time for a new pair in the same model.

Can boxers shrink?

Yes, at high heat in the wash or the dryer. Wash at 40 degrees and dry on low heat or on a line, and they keep their fit for longer.
