Which colours last longest in the wash

Short answer: Medium and muted colors last longest through washing. Black, bright red and deep navy lose intensity visibly first, while white can be restored.

Why some colors lose intensity first

The more dye a color needs to look intense, the more it has to lose before the difference shows. Black and bright colors like red are therefore most exposed, since they start with the highest dye content.
