Why a towel smells after two days

Short answer: A towel is damp every day, it hangs in a warm room, and it has a large surface. Bacteria therefore get ideal conditions around the clock. The solution is air, hanging the towel unfolded and changing it regularly.

The moisture returns every day

Even if the towel nearly dries, it is wet again the next morning. The bacteria never get to go dormant, because new moisture and new skin fat keep arriving. A towel is typically used daily, so conditions almost never become bad enough for the bacteria to stop.

The bathroom is warm

A warm, damp room slows drying and encourages growth. It is the worst combination a textile can hang in. Many bathrooms have little air movement, and the door is often closed, so the towel rarely gets the chance to dry fully between uses. See bamboo towels.

A large surface

A towel has many loops and fibres, and each can hold water and skin fat. That gives the bacteria a large surface to live on compared with an ordinary garment. When the towel hangs folded on a hook, only the outside dries, and the inside stays damp.

The solution is air and replacement

Hang the towel unfolded, air it after a shower, and change it after three to four uses. Those three habits make the most difference and cost only a little attention. With a few towels in rotation, each can dry fully between uses. See bamboo fitted sheets and Nordic Weaving.

Is a rail better than a hook

Yes, markedly. Unfolded fabric dries many times faster than fabric hanging folded on a hook. On a rail there is air on both sides, and the water can evaporate from the whole surface. If you have no room for a rail, hang the towel over a door or a chair when possible.

Does washing at sixty degrees help

Yes, if the fabric tolerates it. It removes both fat and microorganisms that otherwise stay behind at low temperatures. Always check the care label and choose a longer programme if in doubt. Wash towels on their own so they have room in the drum, and avoid softener, which makes them less absorbent.

Why does a new towel not smell

Because there is no skin fat or bacteria in the fibres yet. A new towel has not been used, and it has not been wet and dry many times. The smell comes as fat and moisture build up, which is why an old towel often needs more frequent washing and more air.

How often should you wash it

Three to four uses is a good rule of thumb, but it depends on how well the towel gets to dry between uses. If the bathroom is damp and the towel hangs folded, you can wash it more often. If it smells, it is long overdue. Do not let the smell decide alone.

How to keep towels fresh

Have several towels so they can be swapped, and hang them unfolded with air around them. Wash them at a temperature that removes fat, and avoid softener. Open a window or switch on the fan after a shower so the moisture leaves the room. Small things, but they add up when repeated daily.

Frequently asked questions

Does washing at sixty degrees help

Yes, if the fabric tolerates it and the care label allows it. It removes both fat and microorganisms that could otherwise stay in the fibres and cause odour when the towel gets wet again.

Why does a new towel not smell

Because there is no skin fat or bacteria in the fibres yet. The smell only appears as fat and moisture build up in the towel through repeated use and washing.

Is a rail better than a hook

Yes, markedly. Unfolded fabric dries many times faster, because there is air on both sides. A towel hanging folded on a hook stays damp inside and picks up odour more easily.
