A strapless bra and when it holds

Short answer: A strapless bra is held up by the underband alone. That is why the band has to sit firmly enough to stay in place when you lift your arms, and it usually works best for shorter periods of time.

The band carries everything

Without straps, only the band holds the bra up. The friction between band and skin does all the work. That is why the band needs to sit firmer than on a regular bra, where the straps take some of the weight. If it is loose, the bra slides down within a short time.

Test with your arms up

Always test by raising your arms above your head and moving around a little. If the band slides up or down, the size is wrong. Sit down and stand up again, too. A strapless bra should handle the movements of an evening without you having to adjust it all the time.

For a large bust

The heavier the bust, the more the band has to hold. A wide band spreads the weight over a larger area and sits more steadily than a narrow one. For many with a large bust, a bra with straps is the most comfortable choice for longer wear. Read more in bra without underwire for a large bust.

How long it can be worn

Most people wear a strapless bra for a single evening or with a particular dress. For a full day, a bra with straps is usually more comfortable, because the pressure is spread. Notice how the band feels after a few hours, and change if it starts to dig in. See bamboo bra without underwire.

The alternative

A bra top with wide straps under an open cardigan or shirt is often the more practical choice. It stays put, needs no adjusting and can be worn all day. For clothes where the straps will not show anyway, it is worth considering. See bamboo tops for women.

Size

Measure under the bust, because that is the measurement the band follows. The tape should sit level all the way round and close to the body without pulling tight. If you are between two sizes, the smaller one is often better for a strapless bra. Use the size guide as a starting point.

Edge and elastic

Many strapless bras have a soft edge at the top and elastic in the band that helps them stay in place. The edge should lie flat against the skin without cutting in. If it leaves a clear groove, the bra is too tight and will become uncomfortable quite quickly.

The clothes on top

Think about what you will wear over it. A smooth edge shows less under close-fitting fabric, and a shade close to your skin tone shows less under light clothes. Try the bra on with the dress or top you plan to wear it with before the day comes.

Washing

Wash in a laundry bag at 40 degrees. Heat damages the elastic in the band, and on a strapless bra it is the band that holds everything. Avoid the tumble dryer and let it dry flat. Read more in the washing guide.

When to replace it

When the band no longer holds on the tightest hook, the elastic is worn out. The bra then starts to slip, even if it fitted well when new. This happens faster the more often it is worn and washed. If it is rarely worn, it can last a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a strapless bra slide up?

Because the band is too loose. Without straps, only the band holds the bra, so it needs to sit firmer than on a regular bra to stay in place.

How long can I wear it?

Most people wear it for a single evening. For a full day, a bra with straps is usually more comfortable, as the weight is spread better across the shoulders.

How should I wash it?

In a laundry bag at 40 degrees and never in the tumble dryer. Heat damages the elastic in the band, and the band is what keeps the bra in place.
