How to Wash and Care for Bamboo Clothing – The Complete Guide to Longevity

Bamboo clothing is a noticeable upgrade to your everyday wardrobe—silky-soft, breathable, and temperature-regulating. But to get the most out of the material and ensure it retains its softness and shape for many years, it’s important to wash and care for it properly. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about washing bamboo clothing, from water temperature and detergent to drying and storage.

How to Wash Bamboo Clothing Properly

The most important rule for bamboo clothing is to wash it at a low temperature. 30–40 degrees is ideal. Bamboo viscose wicks away moisture, which means the fabric doesn’t require the high temperatures (60+ degrees) you may be used to when washing cotton. Washing at a low temperature significantly extends the garment’s lifespan, preserves the colors, and minimizes shrinkage. Use a mild detergent without chlorine bleach or fabric softener—fabric softener can reduce the fabric’s natural breathability and moisture-wicking properties.

Turn the clothes inside out before washing; this protects the fibers and prevents surface wear. Wash dark and light colors separately, especially the first few times, as the pigment may bleed. Don’t overload the machine—bamboo clothing needs room to move freely. Use a gentle cycle, such as the wool cycle or delicate wash.

The same rules apply to both your basics and everyday clothing—such as men's bamboo underwear and women's bamboo underwear. Use a low temperature, mild detergent, and avoid fabric softener.

Drying, Ironing, and Storage

Avoid using the dryer if possible. Air-drying is the best method for bamboo clothing, as the heat from the dryer can wear down the fibers and reduce their softness over time. Hang the clothes in the shade or indoors—direct sunlight can fade the colors. If you absolutely must use the dryer, select a low heat setting.

Bamboo clothing wrinkles less than cotton and therefore rarely needs ironing. If you do need to iron it, use low to medium heat and preferably iron it inside out. For shirts like our men’s bamboo shirts, it’s best to hang the shirt on a hanger immediately after washing.

For storage: Fold your bedding and loungewear immediately after washing and store them in a dry, well-ventilated place. Bamboo towels and bamboo bedding stay freshest when stored in open baskets or on shelves where air can circulate.

How long do bamboo clothes last?

With proper washing and care, bamboo clothing can easily last 3–5 years or more—significantly longer than conventional cotton, which typically loses its softness and shape after 1–2 years. Moisture-wicking properties mean the clothing dries quickly and stays fresh, without that “musty” odor that can develop in damp cotton fabrics. For those who wear bamboo clothing for workouts, we have a separate collection: bamboo workout wear for women. Workout clothes can be washed more often than everyday clothes, but the rules are the same.
