Bamboo Bedding – How to Choose the Right Set

Short answer: Bedding is chosen by measurements, not by fit. Measure the duvet and the pillow, not the bed, and order the size sewn into the duvet. Bamboo viscose handles the rest: the fabric is smooth and cool to the touch and moves moisture away, so the bed does not turn clammy during the night.

Measurements first

A cover that is too short rides up at the feet all night, and one that is too large lies in folds and shifts when you turn over. Measure the duvet from seam to seam, and do the same with the pillow, because pillow sizes vary more than people expect. If the size is sewn into the duvet, use it. Expect the fabric to shrink a few per cent in the first wash, and that is already accounted for in the measurements. See bamboo bedding.

What the fabric does at night

The body gives off moisture all night, even without sweating, and it is that moisture which makes a bed feel warm. Cotton absorbs it but releases it slowly, so the sheet stays damp. Bamboo viscose takes the moisture into the fibre and releases it into the air again, so the layer between skin and fabric disappears. The fabric is also smooth and cool to the touch the moment you lie down, which helps if the heat keeps you awake.

Colour and quantity

Two sets are the minimum, so there is always a clean one while the other is washed, and three make a weekly change easy without having to plan for it. Stay with one or two colours, so everything can be combined and a single worn cover does not take a whole set out of use. Dark colours hide use better, light ones show when it needs washing. Both are right, it depends on what you prefer.

The nightwear has to match

Bedding only works together with what you wear. Cotton nightwear under a bamboo cover still holds the moisture where the fabric touches the skin, and then you get half the effect. See bamboo nightwear for women and bamboo nightwear for men. Choose loose rather than close fitting, so the fabric can move and pass the moisture on.

Washing

Thirty or forty degrees, mild detergent and never fabric softener, which settles around the fibres and closes off the moisture transport. Dry on the line or on the lowest heat, and put the cover on while it is still slightly damp, and it smooths itself out so the iron can stay in the cupboard. The same goes for the towels. Frequently asked questions

Which size should I order

The one sewn into your duvet. Measure it from seam to seam if the label is gone, and measure the pillow separately, because those vary more.

How many sets of bedding do you need

Two as a minimum and three if you want to change weekly without thinking about it. The third set is what makes the routine easy.

Does bamboo bedding need ironing

No. Put the cover on while it is slightly damp and the fabric smooths itself out, because it drapes heavier than cotton.
