Bamboo Viscose vs. Cotton Jersey – Fabric Tech for Beginners

Short answer: Bamboo viscose and cotton jersey look alike, but they behave differently. Bamboo vs. cotton is mainly about moisture: bamboo viscose carries sweat away and feels cooler and softer, while cotton jersey soaks moisture up and holds on to it. For underwear and basics worn close to the skin, bamboo viscose therefore often wins.

What are the two fabrics made of?

Cotton jersey is knitted from natural cotton fibres, just as they are harvested from the plant. Bamboo viscose, by contrast, is made chemically: the bamboo is dissolved and spun into new, very smooth fibres. That gives a fabric with a soft drape and a silky surface. If you want to dig deeper into how it is made, read our guide to bamboo viscose and the environment.

Moisture, temperature and comfort

The biggest technical difference is moisture handling. Cotton can absorb a lot of liquid, but releases it slowly, so the fabric feels clammy. Bamboo viscose moves moisture out to the surface, where it evaporates, and that is why the fabric feels dry for longer. It also makes the material comfortable in both heat and cold, as we explain in the post about temperature regulation. In practice you clearly notice the difference in a bamboo T-shirt for men or a bamboo T-shirt for women.

When should you choose which?

Choose bamboo viscose for everything worn close to the skin: underwear, T-shirts, socks and nightwear. Cotton jersey is still fine for looser clothing, where moisture matters less. We put the difference to the test in the post bamboo T-shirt vs. cotton T-shirt, and you will find the full range under bamboo clothing for men and bamboo clothing for women.

Frequently asked questions

Is bamboo viscose softer than cotton jersey?

Yes, as a rule. Bamboo fibres are smoother and more uniform than cotton fibres, so the fabric feels more silky against your skin.

What is best for sweaty skin, bamboo or cotton?

Bamboo viscose. It moves moisture away from your skin, whereas cotton soaks it up and feels wet and clammy.

Does cotton last longer than bamboo viscose?

The two materials last roughly the same if you wash them gently. Bamboo viscose needs a little more care in the wash, but rewards you with softness that lasts.
