How to do laundry when you live in a small space

Short answer: Without a tumble dryer and with little space, drying time is the real limit. Choose fast-drying materials and wash smaller loads more often, to match the space you have.

Drying time is the limit

Without room to hang much up at once, drying becomes the bottleneck rather than the wash itself. A machine can easily handle a full load, but a small home can rarely dry that much at once. See washing and care.

Smaller loads more often

Two smaller washes that can be hung up completely are often better than one big wash that ends up waiting in a bag. Damp clothes left waiting too long quickly start to smell, no matter how clean they are. Bedding is the clearest example, see bamboo bedding.

Materials that dry quickly

Bamboo viscose and other thin fabrics dry faster than thick cotton of the same weight, because the fibres hold less water. That makes a real difference when you have no tumble dryer and depend on air and time. See bamboo underwear for women.

Press the water out

Roll heavy items like towels inside an ordinary towel before hanging them up, then press the water out with your hands. That often halves the drying time without damaging the fabric, and it only takes an extra minute per wash. See bamboo towels.

Hang things up properly

Spread items out rather than squeezing them together on the drying rack, so air can circulate all the way around each piece. Clothes hung too close together dry noticeably slower and can start to smell musty along the way.

Air the room while it dries

Drying indoors releases several litres of water into the room, which needs to get out again to avoid damp and mould on the walls. Air the room regularly or use a dehumidifier, especially if you dry clothes in a bedroom or a small living room.

Pick the right day

Plan your wash around when you have the most time to air the room and the most space to hang things up, rather than simply the day the basket fills up. A dry, mild day makes a visible difference to how fast the clothes are ready.

Underwear dries fastest

Thin items like underwear and socks are the easiest to get dry quickly, so prioritise them when space is tight. See bamboo underwear for men for examples of thin clothes well suited to drying in a hallway or bathroom.

Wash more often rather than a lot at once

Washing a little more often instead of letting a big pile build up makes each individual wash easier to dry completely. It takes a bit more planning in everyday life, but saves you the waiting and the smell of clothes that never quite get properly dry.

Frequently asked questions

What is the limit when you live in a small home?

Drying time. Without room to hang much up at once, it becomes the bottleneck, even though the machine itself can easily handle a full load.

Is it better to wash smaller loads?

Yes, if you cannot hang a whole wash up at once. Two smaller washes dry faster than one big wash waiting in a bag.

How do I halve the drying time?

Roll heavy items in a towel and press the water out before hanging them up. Also spread the clothes out well so air can circulate.
