How to measure your chest correctly

Short answer: Chest is measured straight around the widest point of the chest with your arms by your sides. The measurement decides the size of t-shirts, vests and tops, and it only takes a minute with a soft tape.

How to do it

Put the tape around your back and bring it straight round to the widest point at the front. Keep your arms down by your sides and breathe normally. Read the figure after a calm breath out. If it is hard to reach round yourself, ask someone to hold the tape, and the measurement will be more precise.

The mistake most people make

Many people measure too high up under the arms or with their arms raised, and the figure comes out wrong. Others let the tape slip down at the back so it sits at an angle. The tape should be level all the way round. Use a mirror or get help if you are unsure.

How tight the tape should be

The tape should lie flat against the body without pressing and without sagging. If you can just slide a finger under it, it is right. A tape that is too tight gives a figure that is too small, and you end up with a top that pulls across the chest.

For tops

Chest decides the size of t-shirts and vests. Compare your measurement with the chart on the product page and choose the size that covers it. See the styles in bamboo t-shirts for men and bamboo t-shirts for women, where each item has its own measurements.

The shoulder matters too

A top can fit across the chest and still look wrong if the shoulder seam sits too far out or too far in. The seam should sit at the outer edge of the shoulder. Check both, and feel free to use a top you like as a comparison.

For bras

For a bra you measure both under the bust and across the fullest point. The two figures are used together to find the band and cup size. The method differs a little from tops, so follow a guide step by step. See how to find your bra size at home.

Use the chart

Compare the measurement with the chart on the product page rather than going by the size you usually take. Letter sizes cover different measurements at different brands, while centimetres are the same everywhere. See our size guide for the other measurements.

Close or relaxed fit

If the top is a base layer under a shirt or knitwear, a closer fit is often best so it does not fold. If it is worn on its own, many people choose the size that gives a little room. Think about how you will wear it if your figure falls between two sizes.

Write it down

Your chest measurement does not change from week to week, so there is no need to measure every time. Write the figure down on your phone with your other measurements. Measure again if your weight has changed, or if it is a few years since last time.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure with a bra on

For a bra, yes, because the measurement across the bust should be taken with support. For tops it does not matter, as long as you measure in thin clothing or on the skin.

How tight should the tape be

Flat against the body without pressing in. If you can just slide a finger under the tape, it is right. A tight tape gives a figure that is too small.

What do I do if I am between two sizes

Choose by use. The smaller is often best as a base layer under other clothes, while the larger gives more room if the top is worn on its own.
