Packing for a winter trip to Gran Canaria
Short answer: Gran Canaria has mild weather all winter, with 20 to 24 degrees during the day in the south and 14 to 16 degrees at night. Pack summer clothes for the day, a light layer for evenings and the mountains, and a comfortable pyjama shirt for the cool nights.
The eternal spring
Gran Canaria is often called a continent in miniature, because the climate changes so much from the coast to the mountains. The south coast with Maspalomas and Puerto de Mogán is sunny and dry, while the north coast around Las Palmas is cloudier more often. In the mountains around Roque Nublo and Pico de las Nieves, rising to almost 2,000 metres, it can be cold, and snow even falls on the odd winter day. Plan your outfits around where you will spend each day.
Light T-shirts for the day
During the day in the south, T-shirts, shorts and sandals are enough, and many people swim in the sea, which is around 19 to 20 degrees in winter. Choose light fabrics that breathe and feel comfortable in the sun. See bamboo T-shirt for women. Viscose made from bamboo is soft and smooth and feels cool against the skin. Remember sunscreen, as the sun is strong even when the air is mild.
A layer for evenings and mountains
When the sun goes down, the temperature drops, and a light jumper or cardigan is welcome at a restaurant or on the seafront. If you head up into the mountains, you need a warmer layer, as it can be 10 degrees colder than on the coast. Light tops can be layered under a jumper. See bamboo tops for women.
Cool nights
Many apartments and hotels in the Canary Islands have no heating, and in winter the nights can feel cool indoors, especially in the north and in the mountains. A long sleeved pyjama shirt in a soft fabric is comfortable and can be worn with long or short pyjama bottoms depending on the temperature. See women's Bamboo Pajama Shirt. A pair of socks for the cold tiled floors is also a good idea.
Walking in the mountains
Gran Canaria has many walking routes, for example up to Roque Nublo or through the ravines of Barranco de Guayadeque. The paths are stony, so good shoes with grip are important. Bring water, sun protection and an extra layer. The weather in the mountains can change, and fog can roll in quickly, especially in the afternoon. Start early to avoid the midday heat.
Packing for a winter break
A week on Gran Canaria does not require much. Pack three to four tops or T-shirts, a pair of shorts, long trousers, a light jumper, a thin jacket, swimwear, sandals, walking shoes and sleepwear. Most apartments have a washing machine, and clothes dry quickly in the sun on the balcony. Wash viscose at a low temperature and dry it in the shade so the colours last.
