Socks for boots
Short answer: The cuff has to go higher than the boot edge. That is the only requirement that really matters, and it is also the one most people overlook.
Why the height is decisive
A boot edge of leather or rubber lying directly against the skin rubs with every step. After a day there is a red stripe, after two a blister. A sock that goes higher removes the problem entirely.
The thickness
Choose by how much room there is in the boot. If it is narrow, a thick sock makes it tighter and the foot colder. See bamboo socks for men.
The moisture
Rubber boots let no air out. A sock in bamboo viscose moves the moisture away from the skin so the foot does not get cold. See bamboo socks for women and bamboo compression socks.
Frequently asked questions
How high should the cuff go
At least five centimetres above the boot edge.
Are two pairs of socks a good idea
Only if there is room. Otherwise the foot gets colder.
Do boots need to dry in between
Yes, especially rubber boots. Take the insole out if there is one.
