Spun yarn versus filament yarn

Short answer: Spun yarn is short fibres twisted together and gives a soft, airy fabric. Filament yarn is long, continuous threads and gives a smooth, lustrous fabric.

How they differ

In spun yarn thousands of fibre ends stick out of the thread. Those ends give the fabric a soft, matt surface and are also what form bobbles. Filament yarn has no ends and is therefore smooth throughout.
