The elastic in a sock cuff
Short answer: The cuff has to hold the sock up without marking the leg. That takes a wide, soft rib and not a narrow, tight elastic.
Why socks leave marks
A narrow elastic gathers all the pressure onto a few millimetres of skin. A wide ribbed cuff spreads the same pressure over several centimetres. Same grip, but without a groove in the skin.
How to check
Measure the height of the rib. Three to five centimetres of rib knit is good. A single narrow elastic thread at the top is not. See bamboo socks for men.
When the elastic is worn out
After many washes the elastane gives and the sock falls down. That is wear, not a fault. Washing cold and skipping the tumble dryer delays it. See bamboo socks for women and bamboo compression socks.
Frequently asked questions
Can a loose cuff be tightened
No, not without sewing elastic in. It is easier to replace the sock.
Why does the cuff itch
Often because the elastic is too tight, not because the yarn scratches.
Are tall socks tighter
Not necessarily. Height says nothing about the pressure of the cuff.
